CHALLENGE:
TOTAL E&P Nigeria Ltd is a leading Oil and Gas company offering diversified services to private clients and public agencies throughout the country. With a work force of over 1,500 and still growing, the company commissioned its new 18-storey/floors corporate Head Office called Eko Towers in Lagos with its capacity to perform large and complex functions. With the commissioning of the new structure, the company decided to build a brand-new data center to be shared by all entities in the building. Motives for consolidation included reducing operating costs, simplifying management and helping to ensure application availability.
SOLUTION:
TOTAL Nigeria IT team began evaluating several bids and solutions from top rated System Integrators; they knew that they needed to look beyond unintegrated systems and adopt a more robust, comprehensive solution. Additionally, the company wanted to adopt a stateless architecture that would better support virtualization and improve network scalability. After assessing the numerous bids, TOTAL nominated Weco Systems with its proposed Cisco Unified Communications and Computing System (UCS) (UC), which unifies network, compute, storage access, and virtualization into a single, cohesive system. By adopting these solutions, Weco Systems created an integrated, easily managed environment that supports the company’s initiatives to increase virtualization and deliver more private, cloud-based services. Cisco UCS Manager enables network managers at all levels to rapidly integrate new hardware, provision resources, identify and respond to system issues, and deliver applications and services faster. Cisco Unified Data Center solutions now run all of the company’s critical business applications. Through its unified network, TOTAL also supports a Citrix VDI infrastructure for employees, helping to reduce costs and improve system responsiveness.
RESULTS:
Increased scalability is only one of the advantages of using Cisco Unified Data Centre Solutions at TOTAL. Through simplified network management, TOTAL has been able to redirect IT staffing resources to other high-value activities, including repositioning them as developers, and technology and business specialists. Standardizing its data center on Cisco UCS has also accelerated application deployment and improved business continuity. When it standardized on Cisco UCS, Weco Systems used pre-built server profiles in Cisco UCS Manager and ASSURANCE VMware vMotion to condense 230 physical servers onto six Cisco UCS servers in just one day. And using the same approach today, the company’s IT can quickly scale to add new servers, as well as replace, upgrade, or maintain its systems. The redundancy built into the Cisco UCS helps to ensure that critical business applications and a customer web portal remain available. That’s important in the Oil & Gas industry, where teams working to finalize a bid before a deadline can’t afford for a server or network link to be down. TOTAL employees have experienced uninterrupted application access since the system was deployed. In the event of a future failure, automatic failover will help ensure that users can continue working while the IT department works to fix the issue.
