Challenge
This was a vital project, dependent upon the cabling network connecting various departments and systems across the massive structure. Though the buildings legacy cabling infrastructure was still adequate for the organization’s needs, GSK recognized that an upgrade would need to be initiated before this became a constraint, which will involve considerable planning and world class implementation.
Although future-proofing the buildings operational capabilities were key, Weco Systems also needed to ensure that current business activities were not affected by the cabling upgrade. It was critical the project minimized any impact on end users as temporarily relocating so many people would have significant cost implications to the business.
Solution
To ensure the upgrade did not disrupt the critical services provided to the various departments, Weco Systems project team operated a methodical phased approach to the plan, including a two –prong attack installing a temporary overlay network while the legacy cabling was carefully decommissioned (using a fully audited and documented process) and recovered and the new infrastructure installed, as well as utilizing a small area of swing space to move people in and out of for the more condensed areas.
Due to the scale of the undertaking, the project was divided in to different phases, each covering different sub divided sections of the buildings. Some areas of the project required a more flexible bespoke approach with certain departments working late in the evenings. This had an impact on the implementation schedule, as some areas had core communications equipment that feed the whole building, and subsequently required protection.
