The Customer
The Federal Inland Revenue Service, FIRS is a Federal Government of Nigeria parastatal. Under the old structure as prescribed by the CITA, cap 60, LFN 1990, the FIRS was an operating arm of the Federal Board of Inland Revenue (FBIR). The federal Inland Revenue service is charged with powers of assessment, collection of, and accounting for revenues accruable to the government of the federation; and for related matters.
Challenge
IT has been at the heart of FIRS’s project operations –many of them are in remote areas having minimum infrastructure. Subsidiaries once formed part of its operations, particularly to handle various projects. When FIRS embarked on a new corporate strategy by putting forward its subsidiaries as the profit centers, the role of IT also changed. As a government agency, the firm is responsible for generating revenue for Government through taxation. That means FIRS needs to rely on its own IT infrastructure to deliver best results to them. The company needs a complete set of infrastructure including cabling, servers, data center to IP-based phone and its application.
Solution
WECO Systems has played a prominent role to FIRS through an intensive consultation and implementation service for all IT infrastructures as well as post-project maintenance. FIRS selection of Cisco as its core network infrastructure technology goes in line with WECO – Cisco global partnership. In addition, WECO helped FIRS build a modern data center. It extended complete services from design to implementation, cooling, power and cabling to system integration. WECO Systems completed the project in real time, enabling FIRS to quickly realize the benefit of modern servers and storage system.
Results
FIRS applied strict criteria while selecting the best system integrator for this project. The IT team acknowledged that WECO Systems and Cisco which have formed a global strategic alliance was one key consideration for FIRS to give WECO Systems an opportunity to be the system integrator.
In the network infrastructure, FIRS has set up the long-term roadmap to use Cisco as their core platform for voice and data communications, based on IP technology. Therefore, the network foundation in this project has an important value for future development, such as for implementing unified communications. WECO Systems managed to roll out this network foundation project as quickly as possible without compromising quality.
Next objective of this project will be computing infrastructure. Prior to its plan to move to the new office, FIRS only has one air-conditioned server room. Lacking automated management system, it requires constant monitoring by a stand-by administrator so that he can act promptly against any unanticipated incidents. WECO Systems also helped FIRS build a data center, while extending services from design to implementation. “Thanks to WECO Systems, we now have all-redundant-standard data center, and the implemented best practices in cabling, power, cooling to storage and management,” said a system administrator at FIRS. “IT operations are now running more efficient than ever.”
